There’s a quote by Cy Wakeman that resonates deeply: “Stay in joy or leave in peace. There is no third option.”
It’s simple, bold, and frankly, life-changing. It’s a call to action for anyone feeling stuck in a job, relationship, or situation that brings more frustration than fulfillment. If you can’t find joy, it’s time to leave—and leave gracefully. But there’s no middle ground, no lingering in resentment, disappointment, or self-righteousness.
Yet, as we’ve observed, so many of us set up shop in what we call the Third Option Club.
A heavy burden
Membership in this unofficial club could fill a stadium with people hanging out in that middle space of resentment, fear, and frustration. Maybe you know someone who lives there (or maybe it’s you). And while this state might feel justified in the moment, living in the Third Option Club is exhausting. It takes energy to hold onto anger or disappointment, and that negativity often spills into interactions with others.
It’s heavy. It’s toxic. It’s a needless burden.
Why coaching helps people move on
Many of us have found ourselves lingering in the Third Option Club from time to time. We’ve been through tough experiences—being overlooked for promotions, feeling unappreciated, or navigating difficult changes. These are valid feelings, but staying stuck in them comes at a cost.
Through coaching, clients uncover what’s holding them back and guide them toward letting go of their grievances. The process isn’t about dismissing experiences or pain; it’s about helping us see a path forward that aligns with our values and goals.
Letting go requires courage—what we call humility-fueled courage. It means setting aside the need for validation or vindication and asking ourselves hard questions like:
- What am I holding onto, and how is it serving me?
- How do I want to show up in this moment?
- What would it feel like to choose joy or peace instead of resentment?
With the right coach, you get a safe space to answer these questions and take actionable steps toward leaving the Third Option Club forever.
