The Human Edge

The Human Edge: Why AI Can’t Replace You (Yet)

Artificial intelligence is on everyone’s mind these days, and for good reason. We recently came across a workplace survey that caught our attention: 64% of employees said they would trust a robot more than they trust their manager. As people who work in the leadership business, that stat hit us hard.

So, what’s really behind this?
We think it’s this: Employees believe they can get the basics from a robot—clear instructions and feedback on performance—without having to deal with their manager’s, let’s call it, human stuff. Robots don’t have bad days, don’t let their egos get in the way, and aren’t unfair with accountability. Sounds appealing, right?

But here’s the thing—robots, as advanced as they are, can’t bring the human element to work. And that’s the piece we believe is more essential now than ever before.

What AI Can’t Do (Yet)
Sure, AI can manage tasks, pull together strategies, and make data-driven decisions. But it’s missing something crucial. It can’t offer empathy, curiosity, or humility. It can’t read a person’s body language or truly listen. And it certainly can’t believe in someone’s potential. Those aren’t just nice-to-haves; they’re leadership essentials.

We help leaders build these skills because they are the foundation of great leadership—the very things AI can’t (yet) replace. Leaders who practice these skills foster connection and trust, and that’s something every team needs to thrive.

Future-Proof Your Leadership
AI is here to stay, and it’s changing the way we work. But if you want to ensure you’re not replaced by AI, it’s time to double down on the human skills—what separates you from a machine. Ask yourself: What value am I adding to the people around me? What do they gain from following me? And then, ask yourself how you can get even better at those skills.

At a recent conference on the future of work, the message was clear: Caring is the way forward. Leaders who know how to care about their teams and show up with empathy, curiosity, and humility will be the ones who stand out. They’ll be the ones employees want to work for.
