After the Feedback

Welcome to this episode of Jack Chat and another tiny lesson in leadership, straight up.

Today, I’d like to make a recommendation. It’s a simple recommendation that might have a significant impact.

The day after you give tough feedback to a team member, follow up with them to see how they’re doing.  You might say something like this…

“I appreciate you having that conversation with me yesterday. Maybe you’re not feeling this way, but I’ve felt frustrated and a bit checked out after receiving tough feedback. I don’t take your commitment to this work for granted, so I’m just following up to see how you’re doing.”

Don’t push them to open up – it’s perfectly ok if they don’t want to talk further.

Here are a couple self-reflection questions that will help you follow up with confidence:

  • What might the other person be thinking and feeling as a result of the feedback they received?
  • How can I best show my support for their success?

Give those self-reflection questions some thought…and join me again for another chat!
