Giving Feedback Like a Leader

Giving Feedback Like a Leader

When it comes to giving feedback, it’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing solely on what you need to say. However, here’s an important reminder: you’re giving feedback to a human being. Humans have thoughts, feelings, ideas, and perspectives—and they’ll bring all of those into the conversation when they receive your feedback.

If your preparation for a feedback conversation only involves crafting your observations and judgments, you’re missing a crucial step in the process. Feedback isn’t just about delivering a message—it’s about achieving a better future for both you and the person on the receiving end.

Shift Your Approach
Instead of solely planning your talking points, ask yourself, “What do I hope to achieve?” If your goal is simply to point out mistakes, you’re limiting the potential of the conversation. But if you’re looking to create improved performance, foster growth, or resolve a problem, then your approach needs to be more dynamic.
Effective feedback involves:

  • Listening to understand the other person’s perspective.
  • Coaching to help them see ways forward.
  • Caring enough to ensure the conversation is about improvement, not punishment.

Without these elements, you risk treating the other person like they aren’t real.

Let’s look at an example:
“Hi Sally, you were late twice this week. Yeah… that’s not okay. It’s really bad, so I’m going to need you to stop doing that.”

Does that sound productive? No. It’s an easy way out, and it’s bound to put the other person on the defensive.

Preparing for a More Meaningful Feedback Conversation
Next time you’re preparing to give feedback, consider these self-reflection questions to make sure you’re ready:

  • What do I hope to achieve by giving this feedback?
  • What might the other person be thinking or feeling about this situation?
  • What am I afraid will happen when I give this feedback?

By considering these questions, you’ll be better prepared to approach the conversation with empathy, understanding, and a clear vision of what success looks like.
