Behavior or Mindset: What Comes First?

When talking about company culture, we, of course, need to include things like behavior, team norms, and expectations in the discussion. After all, it’s essential to set clear guidelines about how we want individuals to act within a team or company. However, understanding the role of mindset in shaping behavior is a critical aspect that deserves attention.

Leaders recognize that behaviors stem from underlying mindsets. Setting expectations for certain behaviors requires addressing the mindset driving those behaviors to yield sustainable change. For instance, urging team members to “speak up” without considering their hesitations could lead to unmet expectations and a sense of stagnation.

Consider the scenario where individuals refrain from speaking up, not because they are unwilling, but because they perceive it as unsafe due to past experiences or the prevailing team culture. This discrepancy between expected behavior and mindset creates a detrimental cycle.

Leaders must create an environment conducive to the desired mindset. They should identify factors within the organizational culture that may hinder the adoption of desired behaviors. Furthermore, recognizing that some individuals may struggle to shift their mindset due to ingrained beliefs or past experiences is crucial.

There is a tool to consider—coaching. Coaching helps individuals explore their beliefs, fears, and aspirations, ultimately facilitating a shift toward a more conducive mindset.
